Medieval Pilgrim's Badge Unveils Winged 'Basilisk' in Poland

A rare medieval pilgrim's badge featuring the symbol of a basilisk, a mythological creature similar to a dragon, was discovered in southeast Poland by a metal detectorist. The badge, made of lead alloyed with tin, is less than 0.04 inches thick and a bit over 1 inch across. Pilgrim badges were worn by medieval Christian pilgrims to signify their visits to holy places and protect them during their travels. This find is unique as it is the first known badge to feature a basilisk symbol, and its significance remains a mystery.
