The Limitations of Carbon Capture in Drought-Prone Regions

New research from the University of Virginia suggests that carbon capture measures may not alleviate drought conditions in subtropical regions, including parts of the United States. The study found that even if carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere, the expansion of subtropical dryness caused by climate change would persist, leading to continued drought and extreme dry conditions in areas such as the U.S. Southwest, Northern Mexico, and the Mediterranean Sea region. The findings highlight the limitations of carbon capture in addressing the impacts of climate change on water availability.
