Unearthing Ancient Glaciers and Genetic Material: A Glimpse into Earth's Distant Past

The discovery of rocks in South Africa, buried beneath one of the world's largest gold deposits, provides evidence of Earth's oldest glaciers that existed 2.9 billion years ago. These glaciers predate the previously known oldest ice age, the Huronian glaciation, by half a billion years. The research team analyzed oxygen isotopes in the rock layers and identified the geochemical signature of an icy climate. The findings suggest that the area where the glaciers were found may have been close to a pole and part of an ice cap before shifting to its current location. This discovery sheds light on Earth's early history and the possibility of a lost ice age known as Snowball Earth.
