Arctic's Toxic Time Bomb Ticking.

As permafrost thaws in the Arctic, it releases toxic contaminants that could harm sensitive ecosystems and human health. Human activity in the region, including infrastructure development and industry, exacerbates the thaw. Permafrost collapse can also accelerate climate change by releasing methane. The problem is already deforming communities and damaging infrastructure in the far north. The new study is a step toward localizing the problem and directing governments to where cleanup might be required, but a fix will require a massive effort.
