Florida's Invasive Monitor Lizards Prey on Cats

Nile monitor lizards, an invasive species from Africa, are spreading through Florida and have been known to prey on small animals including domestic cats. They are skillful climbers and swimmers, and their high reproduction rate and diverse diet make them a threat to native wildlife. Populations in Florida are believed to stem from intentional and unintentional releases from animals in captivity.
