Invasive foreign ants that have hitched rides on global imports are becoming the dominant species in Florida, according to a new study. The number of non-native ants has nearly doubled in the past half-century in some areas, while native populations have fallen alongside them. The decline in certain species of leaf-litter ants could impact already threatened ecosystems in the southeastern part of the state. The invading non-native ants are estimated to have arrived with goods imported to Florida from across the globe.
