Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida are breeding new coral on shore and grafting tiny pieces to struggling reefs in an effort to save them from disease, heavy human use, and rising ocean temperatures. The reefs are at a tipping point, having lost almost 97% of their coral covers since the 1980s. Coral reefs are the foundation for almost every living creature on Earth, and their degradation will have consequences throughout the planet. The global average sea surface temperature spiked to a record high in April, beyond most scientists’ predictions, sending a foreboding message.
