The Invisible Threat: Microplastics Polluting Our Atmosphere

A study from Waseda University reveals the presence of airborne microplastics (AMPs) in cloud water, highlighting their role in cloud formation and potential contribution to climate change. These microplastics, which are less than 5 mm in size, are ingested or inhaled by humans and animals and have been found in various organs. The study identifies nine different types of polymers and one type of rubber in the AMPs detected, with hydrophilic polymers being abundant. The accumulation of AMPs in the atmosphere could lead to ecological imbalances and contribute to global warming. Urgent action is needed to address the issue of plastic air pollution and mitigate its irreversible environmental damage.
