Visualizing the Origins of Earth's Carbon Dioxide with NASA

NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio has released three videos showing the amount of carbon dioxide added to the Earth in 2021, from what sources, and from where on the planet. The visualizations highlight the role of fossil fuel burning by industrialized countries in the amount of greenhouse gases released into the air. The work was based on data from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory, 2 (OCO-2). The natural world can only absorb about half of all the carbon dioxide produced annually, leading to a smokey orange bauble by December 2021. The climate crisis can be avoided by bold changes from the world’s governments.
