Scientists have discovered the remains of an 82-foot-long sea monster, believed to be the largest marine reptile ever found, in the UK. The newly described species, named Ichthyotitan severnensis, lived during the end of the Triassic Period and is estimated to be 200 million years old. The fossil was found in pieces at Blue Anchor, Somerset, and is thought to represent a new genus of ichthyosaur. The discovery sheds light on the evolution and extinction of these ancient sea predators, and suggests that intense volcanic activity and seismic events may have contributed to their demise.
