Uruguay Unveils New Aeolosaurini Titanosaur Species

Paleontologists in Uruguay have identified Mesetasaurus protector, a new aeolosaurine titanosaur from two exceptionally preserved tail vertebrae found in the Guichón Formation, placing it within Aeolosaurini alongside Argentine and Brazilian relatives. This suggests multiple titanosaur lineages inhabited present-day Uruguay during the Late Cretaceous, and the discovery, described online in Ameghiniana (July 8, 2026), expands the country’s sauropod record and may aid biostratigraphic dating through tail vertebra morphology.
