Cloud Formation: Exploring the Various Types
Clouds play a crucial role in temperature regulation on Earth by reflecting some of the sun's energy to keep us cool and trapping some to keep us warm. Cloud formation requires the right combination of ingredients and conditions, including the presence of cloud condensation nuclei, reaching 100 percent relative humidity, and specific temperature and dew point conditions. The World Meteorological Organization's International Cloud Atlas lists 10 main types of clouds, including cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus. Clouds are not exclusive to Earth and can be found on other planets, with different compositions such as ammonia ice on Jupiter and sulfuric acid on Venus. Satellites have greatly aided our understanding of clouds and their impact on climate.
