"Discovery of Life's Building Blocks: Unveiling Hidden Protoplanets and Carbon Molecules in Distant Star Systems"
Astronomers have discovered high amounts of the amino acid tryptophan in interstellar material within a star-birthing region of space known as the Perseus Molecular Complex, located just 1,000 light-years from Earth. The presence of tryptophan, a key protein-building amino acid, suggests that the building blocks of proteins may be widely present in the gas and dust that form planetary systems around young stars. This discovery opens up the possibility for the development of life in exoplanetary systems. The research was conducted using data collected by the Spitzer Space Telescope and will be followed up with observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.
