AI Detects, Confirms, Classifies, and Shares First Supernova

An international collaboration led by Northwestern University has developed an AI tool called the Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot) that automates the detection, identification, and classification of supernovae. The system successfully detected and confirmed its first supernova, eliminating the need for human involvement and reducing errors. By rapidly analyzing and classifying new supernova candidates, the tool accelerates the pace of discovery and allows researchers to focus on other responsibilities. The AI tool was trained using machine learning algorithms with over 1.4 million historical images, and its success marks a significant step forward in understanding the life cycles of stars and the origin of elements created by supernovae.
