Defending Earth: Tackling the 'Rubble Pile' Asteroid Threat

The composition of asteroids, particularly rubble piles, has posed a challenge for planetary defense. While the kinetic impact method has been successful in deflecting asteroids, it risks disrupting and blasting apart rubble piles. An alternative approach is ion beam deflection, which spreads the power out over a longer period and works on rubble piles regardless of their composition or rotation. The Gravity Tractor, which uses a spacecraft's gravitational field to deflect asteroids, is also being studied. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is expected to greatly enhance asteroid detection capabilities. However, in addition to technological challenges, there is a need to address the political and sociological aspects of planetary defense governance to ensure effective international cooperation in the face of potential asteroid threats.
