NASA Radar Unveils Hidden Cold War Base Beneath Greenland Ice
TL;DR
NASA's recent survey of Greenland's ice sheets revealed Camp Century, a Cold War-era U.S. military base designed for a secret nuclear missile project called Project Iceworm. The base, abandoned in 1967, consisted of tunnels intended to house missiles aimed at the Soviet Union. The discovery highlights concerns about climate change, as melting ice threatens to expose buried contaminants. NASA plans to use the data to study ice sheet responses to climate change.
