Stunning Computer Simulations Reveal Sun's Magnetic Field

Scientists have used computer simulations to study the Sun's magnetic fields and have found evidence for the existence of a small-scale dynamo (SSD) that can amplify magnetic fields on scales smaller than the driving scale of turbulence. The SSD has a huge influence on the Sun's behaviour and contributes to a better understanding of solar weather and when we might expect incoming mayhem. The findings are a major step towards understanding magnetic field generation in the Sun and other stars, and resolving the riddle of coronal mass ejection formation, which is important for devising protection for the Earth against hazardous space weather.
