Scientists in eastern France have stumbled upon a potentially massive hydrogen deposit while conducting research on methane production. The discovery was made in a borehole that was originally drilled to study carboniferous sediments. The concentration of dissolved hydrogen at a depth of 1,100 meters was found to be 14 percent, with estimates suggesting it could reach as high as 90 percent at 3,000 meters. The Lorraine region in eastern France, where the deposit was found, could potentially contain 46 million tons of naturally produced hydrogen, making it one of the world's largest known hydrogen deposits. Further research will be conducted to validate the hydrogen concentration and explore its source.
