Unveiling a Promising Bacterial Order for Enhanced Biogas Production

Scientists from the Micro4Biogas project have discovered a new taxonomic order of bacteria called Darwinibacteriales, which is abundant in biogas-producing tanks. This finding could hold the key to improving biogas fuel production. The researchers analyzed samples from 45 biogas plants across Europe and found that members of Darwinibacteriales were present in all samples. They suspect that these bacteria work in collaboration with archaea to produce methane gas. By understanding and harnessing the capabilities of these bacteria, scientists aim to create tailored communities of biogas-producing microbes, making biogas plants more efficient and commercially viable.
