Newly Discovered Demon Catshark Species with White Shiny Eyes Found in Australian Waters

Researchers have identified a new species of deepwater catshark, Apristurus ovicorrugatus, from northwestern Australia, after discovering unique egg cases in an Australian museum in 2011. The egg cases have strong T-shaped ridges and a corrugated design unique to the species. The researchers also found that the Apristurus ovicorrugatus would have bright white eyes, which are unusual among deep-water organisms. The discovery brings the number of identified catshark species to about 40, with nine species found in the last 20 years.
