"Get Ready for the Rare and Mysterious Black Moon in May 2023"

The new moon, the first of four phases of the lunar cycle, will rise in the sky today, but it won't be visible. However, it is a rare "black moon," which can be defined as the second new moon of a calendar month or the third new moon in a season that has four new moons. Black moons occur every 33 months or so. As the moon is dark, its bright light won't drown out dimmer celestial objects like planets and stars, making it a good night for stargazing and astrophotography.
