China's Yutu 2 rover, part of the Chang'e 4 mission, has provided new insights into the deep layers below the surface of the moon's far side. Using ground penetrating radar, the rover has detected multiple layers up to 1,000 feet below the surface, suggesting a series of basalt eruptions billions of years ago. The data reveals a representation of the moon's upper layers, with evidence of decreasing volcanic activity over time. The Yutu 2 rover has been active since January 2019 and will be followed by China's Chang'e 6 mission next year, which aims to collect samples from the far side of the moon.
