NASA's Mars Sample Return Mission in Jeopardy Due to Funding Shortfall

NASA's Mars Sample Return mission needs an additional $250 million in the current fiscal year and another $250 million in 2024 to stay on track for launch in 2028, according to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. The mission, a joint effort between NASA and the European Space Agency, aims to collect rock samples from the Martian surface and return them to Earth. The mission received $822.3 million in the 2023 spending bill and NASA requested $949.3 million for Mars Sample Return in its budget proposal for 2024. There are concerns, however, that the actual cost of the mission will surpass the early estimate of $7 billion.
