"Revolutionizing Connectivity: Gigabit Internet Arrives at the Space Station"

NASA is integrating a technology demonstrator called ILLUMA-T aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to test optical (laser) communications and data transfer. Once complete, this system will provide the ISS with a gigabit internet connection, ten times faster than the global average. The system relies on infrared light, allowing for higher data rates and showcasing the benefits of laser relay arrays for missions in low Earth orbit. The ILLUMA-T system will be launched as part of SpaceX's Commercial Resupply Services mission and will enable missions to send more images and videos back to Earth in a single transmission. Laser communications offer flexibility, faster data transfer, and increased scientific returns for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
