A 29-year study tracking 2,700 spotted hyenas across eight generations in Tanzania finds that social privilege is inherited by daughters, causing female reproductive inequality to rise over time. By the sixth generation, nearly all clan members trace their lineage to alpha matriarchs, explaining why females become the more competitive sex in hyenas.
