Oil Industry and COP28: Emission Reduction Talks Gain Momentum

Major oil and gas companies held discussions with heavy industry leaders in the United Arab Emirates to reach a firm commitment on reducing carbon emissions ahead of the COP28 summit. The summit, scheduled for November 30 to December 12, is seen as a crucial opportunity for governments to accelerate action on limiting global warming. The aim is to get major industry players to make decarbonization commitments that will help limit global warming. The meeting brought together CEOs from over 50 companies in the oil and gas sector and the aluminium, steel, and cement industries. The inclusion of oil and gas representatives marks a departure from the 2021 U.N. climate change summit, where energy companies felt excluded. Countries remain divided between those demanding a phase-out of fossil fuels and those insisting on preserving a role for coal, oil, and natural gas.
