Antarctic Ice Shelves: Alarming Melts and Trillions of Tons Lost

A new study reveals that four dozen Antarctic ice shelves have shrunk by at least 30% since 1997, with 28 of them losing more than half of their ice in that time. The study also shows that 68 out of 162 ice shelves have significantly shrunk between 1997 and 2021, while 29 grew, 62 remained unchanged, and three lost mass without a significant trend. These melting ice shelves contribute to rising sea levels and are a result of climate change. The study highlights the importance of understanding the loss of ice from these protective floating shelves in order to comprehend the evolution of Antarctica.
