The Significance of Niger's Instability for Global Powers

Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland visited Niger to address the challenge to the democratic order that began on July 26. She met with Nigerien civil society and the self-proclaimed chief of defense, General Barmou, to push for a negotiated solution and emphasize the importance of restoring democracy. However, the conversations were difficult, and the request to meet with President Bazoum was denied. Nuland warned that the U.S. would cut off economic and other support if democracy is not restored, and assistance has already been paused. The U.S. offered its good offices to help with a return to constitutional order but was not taken up on the offer. Nuland also raised concerns about the presence of Wagner, a Russian military group, in Niger.
