Anticipating a Surge in Northern Lights: Sun's Activity Promises Spectacular Displays

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that solar activity will strengthen in 2024, leading to more frequent displays of the aurora borealis, or northern lights. The current solar cycle, the 25th cycle, is expected to reach its peak activity from January to October 2024, earlier and stronger than initially forecasted. However, accurately predicting such events more than a few days in advance remains challenging. Auroras occur when strong geomagnetic storms cause disturbances in Earth's magnetosphere, resulting in visible light known as the aurora borealis.
