Sweden Signs Four-FDI Frigates Deal with France for Luleå-class Expansion

Sweden and France formalized a contract for four Defense and Intervention Frigates (FDI) to form the Royal Swedish Navy’s new Luleå-class, with the first ship due in 2030. The deal includes a long-term industrial partnership and technology transfer, and the vessels will feature Aster 30 and CAMM-ER air defense with SYLVER A50 VLS (no Naval Cruise Missiles yet, but a future option to swap to A70 is possible). The signing occurred in Stockholm in a ceremony attended by President Macron and PM Kristersson, underscoring enhanced Sweden–France defense cooperation in a post-NATO accession security environment and Sweden’s expanded Baltic/North Sea mission profile with a hybrid crewed/uncrewed capability approach.
