EU Advised to Cut Emissions by 90-95% by 2040 to Meet Climate Targets

The European Union's advisory board on climate change has recommended that the bloc should commit to reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 90-95% by 2040, compared to 1990 levels, as it prepares to set a legally binding emissions-cutting target for 2040. The target is aimed at guiding the EU towards its goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2050 and is consistent with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C. The advisers said the target would require a massive scale-up of renewable energy, electrification of polluting industries, and replacing fossil fuels with alternatives like hydrogen.
