Record High: Greenhouse Gases Continue to Rise, UN Reports

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported that the concentration of climate-heating gases in the atmosphere reached record highs in 2022, driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide levels are now 50% higher than pre-Industrial Revolution levels, with the Earth not experiencing similar CO2 levels for millions of years. Methane and nitrous oxide concentrations also increased. The report highlights that greenhouse gas levels will continue to rise until emissions are reduced to net zero, leading to further global heating and extreme weather impacts. Despite progress in renewable energy and electric cars, countries are failing to meet emission reduction targets. The WMO warns that urgent action is needed to reduce fossil fuel consumption and avoid surpassing the Paris Agreement targets.
