Unprotected Ecosystems at the Mercy of the Great Melt

Glaciers outside the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets could lose up to half of their area by 2100, according to a study. This rapid shrinkage of glaciers due to climate change poses uncertain consequences for species adapted to glacial conditions. The analysis highlights the urgent need for enhanced climate-change mitigation and conservation measures, as around half of these glacier areas are currently unprotected.
