UN Envoys Demand Immediate End to Israel-Hamas Conflict on Gaza Border

UN Security Council envoys visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, the only entry point for aid into Gaza, and spoke of unimaginable suffering, urging an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. A majority of UN member states support an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as dire conditions worsen for Gaza's 2.3 million residents. The US vetoed a draft resolution at the Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire. The envoys were briefed on the dire conditions in Gaza, including malnutrition, collapsing medical systems, and a lack of water and food. The situation in Gaza is described as catastrophic, with civilian casualties and displacement at alarming levels. Concerns are growing that Palestinians could be forced out of the territory altogether. Aid delivery to Gaza has been severely restricted, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The UN General Assembly will meet to discuss the situation in Gaza and vote on a draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
