Iran intensifies plans for attacks on US troops in Syria

Iran is reportedly arming militants in Syria with more powerful armor-piercing roadside bombs to target US military vehicles and personnel, according to leaked classified documents. The documents also reveal a broader effort by Iran, Russia, and Syria to oust the US from Syria, risking a wider military confrontation. The explosive devices, called explosively formed penetrators (EFPs), were used by pro-Iranian insurgents in lethal attacks against American military convoys during the US occupation of Iraq. The leaked documents describe plans for a wide-ranging campaign by US opponents that would involve stoking popular resistance and supporting a grass-roots movement to carry out attacks against Americans in eastern and northeastern Syria.
