Slovenia defeats Russia ally Belarus for UN Security Council seat.
Belarus was denied a seat on the United Nations Security Council after Slovenia won the Eastern European seat in an overwhelming defeat. Belarus has been a top supporter of Russia in its war efforts in Ukraine and allowed Russia to deploy tactical nuclear weapons within its borders. Iran, another top Russia supporter, was elected to a vice presidential role and as rapporteur for the General Assembly’s Committee on Disarmament and International Security, despite its record in violating ballistic and nuclear regulations outlined under UN charter. Five other nations, including Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, South Korea, and Slovenia, won the top spots and will join the five permanent veto-wielding members on the Security Council.
