Newly Discovered Burrowing Creature Found in Canals, Lagoons, and Thai Islands

A new species of fish, Pisodonophis kalinga, has been discovered in India that burrows beneath the ground in bodies of brackish and fresh water. The olive-colored eel was initially confused with a similar species, Pisodonophis boro, but molecular and physical differences indicated it was a distinct and previously unknown species. The creature has a "rather robust" and "elongated" body with "irregular" patches of teeth and burrows into the soft bottom of bodies of water tail-first. It has only been found in Odisha, though it's possible it has a larger range. The species is abundant in the monsoon season, occurring between September and November.
