Ancient Genome Reorganization Drives Cephalopod Neural Complexity via 3D Architecture
A University of Vienna study reveals that the complex nervous systems of octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish evolved through large-scale chromosomal rearrangements that reshaped 3D genome architecture. While broad chromatin domains remained stable, dynamic chromatin loops created new regulatory interactions, a process termed 'regulatory entanglement,' facilitating novel gene expression patterns essential for neural development.
