Egypt Fossil Rewrites Ape Origins, Expanding the Map Beyond East Africa
A fossil from Wadi Moghra in northern Egypt, Masripithecus moghraensis (about 17–18 million years old), may be close to the ancestor of all living apes, challenging the East Africa-centric view. Using Bayesian tip-dating, researchers place it among stem hominoids, suggesting Afro-Arabia and nearby regions were part of early ape evolution, though the fossil record remains sparse and more work is needed.
