Google is testing a change where AI Overviews now load the full AI Mode-style answer by default for certain queries, with the follow-up “Ask anything” box open and the traditional ten blue links pushed further down the page. Google says expansions occur dynamically only when useful and will stop if a user has started scrolling, a move praised for deeper engagement but criticized for disadvantaging publishers.
Google Search is getting five major AI upgrades, notably Gemini Notebook integrated in Search, interactive 3D visuals, auto-generated one-page study docs from notes, official practice quizzes with education partners, and Lens step-by-step coaching, with a global English rollout in AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Google is rolling out Information Agents in AI Mode for Google AI Ultra subscribers. The feature, announced at Google I/O, lets Search agents monitor the web and real-time data, sending updates and links when new information matches a user’s query (e.g., apartment listings or sneaker drops). Available across AI Mode languages/markets with broader rollout planned this summer.
Google unveiled an AI-first overhaul of Search, turning the traditional results page into a Gemini-powered, conversational interface with on-the-fly mini-apps and continuous information agents that monitor the web; while this makes queries faster and more interactive, it can reduce exposure to raw links, raise accuracy concerns, and prompts questions about the future of the open web and publishers’ roles.
At Google I/O 2026, Google promotes AI Mode as the end-to-end AI search experience, but the piece argues it risks cannibalizing the open web by steering traffic to Google-owned properties, embedding AI-generated answers with citations, and potentially diminishing external referrals and source visibility, raising questions about user choice and accountability.
Google announced five updates to how links are shown in AI Mode and AI Overviews: end-of-answer suggestions linking to related articles; highlighting links from your subscriptions for quick access to trusted content; showing creators’ names/handles to provide context for online discussions; placing more links near the relevant text; and enabling hover previews of inline links on desktop to preview sites before clicking.

Google is rolling out Canvas in AI Mode within Search to a broader US audience, introducing a dedicated workspace that uses live Search data to help users organize plans, draft documents, and prototype tools. The feature, which was previously tested for travel planning, now supports creative writing and coding and can be accessed by opening AI Mode in Search and selecting Canvas; it’s currently English-only.
Google will display links to cited sources inside its AI Overviews and AI Mode with hover-triggered pop-ups that include descriptions and images, and will show descriptive link icons in responses on desktop and mobile; the change aims to improve content discovery while regulators review AI’s effect on publishers, and Google says publishers can opt out of appearing in AI search features.
Google Search now uses Gemini 3 as the default for AI Overviews and enables a seamless handoff into AI Mode, transforming the search results page into a Gemini-powered, context-aware conversational assistant that lets users ask follow-up questions without leaving the page.

Google is adding an opt-in Personal Intelligence feature to AI Mode in Search, letting the chatbot analyze your Gmail and Google Photos to tailor responses and suggestions (such as travel itineraries and shopping) based on your emails, bookings, and photos. The rollout is in the US for personal Google accounts. Google says Gemini 3 doesn’t train directly on Gmail or Photos, using limited data from prompts/responses, and users can correct recommendations via feedback.
