Tiny Garnet Grains in Martian Meteorite Hint at Mars' Hidden Geology
Scientists found a few grains of garnet (andradite) inside the Martian meteorite NWA 8171, a tiny basaltic breccia fragment stored in a museum. This is the first garnet identified in a Martian sample and could illuminate Mars’ metamorphic history, though it’s unclear whether the garnet formed on Mars or was delivered from elsewhere. Isotope analyses are planned to pin down its origin, which could reshape our understanding of Mars’ deep geology and ancient environments.
