Trump Admin Bets $17.5B on 10 New Nuclear Reactors for Data Centers

The Trump administration announced up to $17.5 billion in federal loans to speed the development of 10 large AP1000 nuclear reactors to meet rising electricity demand from data centers. Five sites will host two reactors each, with construction targeted to begin by 2030 and power generation in the mid-2030s. Utilities will contribute equity, and the loans are designed to accelerate supply chain development and reduce costs, drawing on lessons from the Vogtle project. The plan aims to scale up fleet production to support future technology and manufacturing needs, though critics point to nuclear costs and risk relative to alternative low-carbon options.

DOE Unveils $17.5B Plan to Rebuild U.S. Nuclear Supply Chain and Deploy 10 AP1000 Reactors

The U.S. Department of Energy issued a conditional $17.5 billion loan commitment to finance long-lead items for five projects that will deploy 10 Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, accelerating construction by up to three years and rebuilding the American nuclear supply chain. EDF will support up to five loans, each backing two reactors, with each project requiring $1 billion upfront equity ($500M from Westinghouse and $500M from a partner) and letters of intent from potential partners. Final financing depends on meeting technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions. The move aligns with President Trump’s goal of having 10 reactors under construction by 2030 and aims to reduce costs and timelines through bulk purchasing of equipment.

Poland Takes a Historic Step Towards Nuclear Power with Landmark Contract

Westinghouse Electric Company, Bechtel, and Polish utility Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe have signed an Engineering Services Contract for Poland's first nuclear power plant at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in Pomerania. The contract includes designing three Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear islands, turbine island and balance of plant design work, and support for license application materials and training programs. The project aims to rebuild Poland's energy mix, strengthen the economy, and create opportunities for the country. The first AP1000 reactor is expected to achieve commercial operation in 2033.
