Android app verification rolls out in September with new store partners

Google will begin deploying its Android developer verification in September, starting in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. The system will block installation of unverified apps on Google-certified devices and extend verification to trusted third-party stores such as HONOR App Market, OPlus (OPPO App Market), Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo's V-Appstore and Xiaomi GetApps. New APIs—the Android Developer ID Status API and the Android Developer Console API—will let developers register and manage packages from their IDEs. A July rollout will introduce limited-distribution accounts for hobbyists (no fee, up to 20 devices); August adds the advanced flow to bypass verification (with multiple confirmations and a 24-hour wait); September expands verification to the initial markets, with plans to broaden globally in 2027.

Google reveals 24-hour window to bypass Android app verification for sideloaded apps

Google plans a phased Android app verification rollout, restricting sideloading to verified developers starting September 2026. An “advanced flow” buried in developer settings lets power users bypass verification after a 24-hour wait, while non‑Play Store apps must have identity verification, signing-key uploads, and a $25 fee. The approach aims to curb malware, with the initial rollout in Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand before expanding globally.

This move towards a more closed Android ecosystem threatens the open platform that has supported emulation and retro gaming growth.
