South Africa Unveils Earth's Oldest Glaciers
Evidence of Earth's oldest glaciers has been discovered in South Africa, dating back approximately 3 billion years. The study analyzed rock samples from the Pongola Supergroup and found geological features similar to glacial moraines, including jumbled rocks, finely ground sediments, and dropstones. Using triple oxygen isotope analysis, researchers detected evidence of near-freezing-cold water interacting with the rocks, suggesting the presence of ancient glaciers. The findings shed light on the climate conditions during the Archaean Eon and indicate that Earth's climate has likely undergone significant swings between warmer and colder conditions throughout its history.
