Bolton Captain Arthur Rostron's Critical Role in Saving 705 Titanic Survivors
Arthur Rostron, a Bolton-born captain, steered the RMS Carpathia through a hazardous iceberg field to rescue 705 survivors of the Titanic disaster in 1912. His decisive action, taken after receiving a delayed distress signal, earned him a knighthood and a US Congressional Gold Medal. The rescue operation was complicated by the Carpathia's proximity to icebergs and the logistical challenge of managing hundreds of hypothermic passengers.
