A new study suggests that asteroid strikes could have triggered "Snowball Earth" periods, causing planet-wide deep freeze events in the distant past. The research team used a sophisticated climate model to simulate the aftermath of hypothetical asteroid strikes during different periods in Earth's history and found that under sufficiently cold initial climate conditions, an asteroid impact could have rapidly tipped the planet into a "Snowball" state. This study may provide a new perspective on the causes of global glaciation events and could help answer longstanding questions about dramatic climate shifts in Earth's history.
