Counting Emmy Slots: How Nominations Are Allocated in 2026
Voting for the 2026 Emmy nominations is underway through June 22, and the Television Academy uses a proportional system to decide how many nominees each category may have, with Comedy Series and Drama Series still capped at eight. For most categories, slots scale with submissions: 20–80 submissions = 5 slots, 81–160 = 6, 161–240 = 7, 241+ = 8, while eight-to-19 submissions are divided by four and rounded to determine slots. Acting categories are kept in parity with their genre group, and categories with zero to seven submissions are peer‑screened, with up to two nominees if they clear 70% approval. Writing and Directing slots also shifted in several categories, including reductions in Drama Directing, Limited/TV Movie Directing/Writing, and Variety Special (Pre-Recorded).
