Barrett’s Esophagus Emerges as the Universal Origin of Esophageal Cancer
A Cambridge-led study provides strong evidence that Barrett’s esophagus is the universal precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma, even when visible signs are absent at diagnosis, by showing nearly identical DNA mutations across cancers. Researchers also identified biomarkers like TFF3 and REG4 that persist through disease, suggesting molecular screening could detect hidden pre-cancer risk and enable earlier intervention.
