FAA probes near-miss as military helicopter crosses landing path of United flight in California
The FAA is investigating after a California National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crossed in front of United Airlines Flight 589 while it was landing at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana. At closest approach, the aircraft were about 525 feet apart vertically and 1,422 feet apart laterally; air-traffic controllers warned the United pilots to watch for the helicopter, which was on a routine training mission. The agency will review the incident, joining broader scrutiny and radar-tracking changes prompted by prior near-misses at busy airports.
