"China's Failure to Address Online Racism Against Black People Exposed"

Human Rights Watch has called on China to address the increasing prevalence of racist content targeting Black people on Chinese social media platforms. The rights group found that platforms such as Weibo, Douyin, Bilibili, Livestream, Kuaishou, and Xiaohongshu have failed to deal with offensive racial stereotypes and hate speech. Influencer videos depicting Black Africans as primitive and Black people in relationships with Chinese as traitors were widely shared. Human Rights Watch also highlighted the online abuse and threats faced by Chinese in interracial relationships with Black people. The group urged the Chinese government and social media platforms to take action against racism and promote tolerance.

Nurse's Melanoma Symptom Uncovered Skin Cancer

Ilia Smith, a Black nurse practitioner, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, after a dark spot on her hip started bleeding and itching. Smith had enjoyed tanning in her 20s and 30s without much sunscreen or worry, and never thought about the spot until a dermatologist’s physician’s assistant warned her to watch it. Although melanoma is more common in white people, people of all colors can get skin cancer, and when Black patients develop melanoma, their survival rates lag those of white patients, perhaps because they’re diagnosed at later stages when the disease has already progressed. Smith advises regular skin checks and monitoring of any changing moles or birthmarks.
